Genesis is pleased to announce its contribution to the development of the first Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) Offshore Wind Decommissioning Guidelines.

As the offshore wind industry continues to evolve, the decommissioning of the first generations of wind turbines is already in progress. This ongoing process will see a continuous turnover of turbines to be removed and recycled. In response to this growing need, OEUK led world-leading decommissioning experts to produce a pioneering set of guidelines for the removal of offshore wind turbines that have reached the end of their useful life.

Genesis' Decommissioning Study Manager Tim Hollis, along with specialists from across the sector, played an important role in the development of these guidelines. Over the course of two years, they adapted decommissioning experience from North Sea oil and gas installations to meet the specific needs of the wind industry.

The Designing for Decommissioning of Offshore Wind Guidelines and the Offshore Wind Decommissioning Work Breakdown Structure Guidelines provide comprehensive guidance on the decommissioning of offshore wind farms. The two guidelines offer critical insights and recommendations for integrating decommissioning considerations into the design and operation of offshore wind projects, helping to enhance safety, sustainability and cost efficiency.

Key Highlights of the Guidelines:

  • Regulatory Compliance: The guidelines provide a comprehensive overview of international, regional and UK-specific regulations, ensuring that decommissioning activities adhere to all relevant legal requirements.
  • Best Practices: Leveraging decades of experience from the energy sector, the guidelines incorporate best practices to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of offshore wind decommissioning.
  • Environmental Protection: Emphasising sustainable practices, the guidelines focus on minimising environmental impact throughout the decommissioning process.
  • Cost Management: The guidelines offer detailed insights into accurate cost estimation, budgeting and financial planning, helping stakeholders manage decommissioning costs effectively.

At Genesis, our dedication to engineering excellence and sustainable change underpins our efforts to empower clients in making strategic and informed decisions in decommissioning. Our partnership with OEUK strengthens our dedication to the wind sector and establishes new industry standards in wind decommissioning.
